About Applied Photonics Sector
Applied Photonics is a business unit within Quartus that focuses on the practical application of the science and technology of light. Our teams develop innovative products as well as custom optical and metrology solutions for commercial and industrial applications. Our expertise spans precision metrology, robotics, machine vision, semiconductor and emerging photonic technologies including quantum optics. Typical development cycles begin with defining customer objectives, progress through all stages of design and analysis, and conclude with hardware build and rigorous testing.
Our clients range from large, industry-leading organizations to agile startup-style companies. We pride ourselves on bridging diverse perspectives and delivering advanced technical systems that meet each program’s budget and schedule constraints.
Our multidisciplinary team—comprising optical, opto-mechanical, mechanical, electrical, and software engineers—works in a highly collaborative environment where communication and team ethics are paramount.
What will you do?
As a Mechanical Engineer II, you will design and develop robust mechanical systems for high-performance applications. You will work as part of a team of creative, cross-disciplinary engineers to meet project and customer requirements, with exposure to a wide variety of systems across metrology, semiconductor equipment, and industrial automation. At Quartus, you will be involved in the entire project lifecycle, from concept and design to build, test, and integration.
Essential Job Functions:
- Design and develop precision mechanical assemblies and subsystems
- Select, specify, and integrate motion and automation components such as linear and rotary stages, hexapods, actuators, and sensors
- Design and build prototypes; create detailed drawings and instructions for production
- Support assembly, integration, and testing in the lab or at customer sites
- Perform risk and tolerance analyses and lead subsystem FMEAs
- Develop tolerance budgets and drive design decisions at the component and assembly level
- Perform structural and thermal analyses to validate designs
- Own technical documentation (models, CAD drawings, simulations, BOMs, etc.)
- Work directly with program managers and customers to define and flow down technical requirements
- Execute projects independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technicians
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to design reviews
Location
Position is based in San Diego, CA with a hybrid schedule.*
*The hybrid work arrangement is subject to change based on business needs including but not limited to training, performance, or other operational requirements. Any physical location change may impact future employment.
What are we looking for?
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience
- 2–4 years of professional experience in high-precision mechanical design
- Strong fundamentals in:
- Thermal expansion and designing for thermal stability
- GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and degrees of freedom / kinematic constraint
- Design for manufacturability
- Strong CAD modeling skills (SolidWorks preferred)
- Design validation using finite element analysis (structural and thermal)
- Demonstrated ability to take a design from concept through fabrication and test
- Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience integrating precision motion systems (stages, hexapods, actuators) and working with motion control
- Experience with metrology, semiconductor, or industrial automation equipment
- Experience designing for dimensional stability and vibration isolation
- Familiarity with opto-mechanical design or optical system integration a plus
- Hands-on experience with assembly, alignment, or test
